Counterbalance
Counterbalance is recognized as the world’s largest and most impactful carbon avoidance offset program. Our primary goal is to provide fully transparent carbon credits to corporations, institutions, and individuals. We achieve this by implementing a model of 100% avoidance, ensuring that our clients can easily track the origin and impact of their carbon credits. By offering an innovative approach, we empower our valued clients to effectively reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Counterbalance sets itself apart by creating carbon credits through the protection of carbon fossil deposits that would otherwise be released through an approved drilling program. Unlike traditional emission reduction projects such as carbon capture and storage, our approach takes a proactive stance rather than a reactive one. Even the most advanced carbon capture solutions are unable to capture 100% of emissions. At Counterbalance, we prioritize prevention, aiming to avoid carbon emissions altogether. This results in the production of tangible and impactful carbon credits.
Counterbalance has made a remarkable decision in the field of energy development. In Alberta’s Athabasca Oil production region, where major oil and gas producers are prevalent, lies the expansive 12,000-acre tar sands project. However, Counterbalance has chosen to break away from the norm by voluntarily withdrawing its application for oil extraction. Instead, we have opted to leave the reserves untouched beneath the ground. This conscious choice highlights our strong commitment to sustainable practices and underscores our unwavering dedication to carbon avoidance.
While other types of carbon credits may only partially offset emissions, there can be varying levels of confidence in the permanence and effectiveness of carbon capture and storage methods. By guaranteeing that fossil fuels remain unextracted and undisturbed in the ground, they play a crucial role in any long-term strategy to combat climate change. Prioritizing the prevention of carbon emissions, this approach establishes a solid foundation for sustainable progress and a healthier planet.
